During the SAP WM roll-out at the Pick n Pay warehouses, gaps were identified in Master Data Management. This feedback was given to Pick n Pay management as part of the Britehouse Specialist SAP Division “Lessons Learnt” approach to review each project after implementation.
Pick n Pay commissioned Britehouse Specialist SAP Division to develop a series of ABAP programmes to confirm, identify and highlight any Supply Chain Master Data inconsistencies.
The Britehouse Specialist SAP Division ABAPs identified and confirmed the inconsistencies and Pick n Pay agreed to introduce a Master Data Management Department, supported by Pick n Pay trained staff.
To enable the Pick n Pay Master Data Management Department, Britehouse Specialist SAP Division were tasked to
- Develop an Electronic Article Take-on ABAP Development and assist in the implementation of the related processes.
- Roll-out the Electronic Article Take-on Process to all Regions.
- Build an MDM Roadmap and Governance Plan.
- Submit SAP MDM 7.1 Business Case with costs for Article Data enrichment
The challenges that we faced on the project were to:
- Eliminate all manual Material Master Data processing for capturing and extending Material Master Data.
- Expand data quality measures to include all Supply Chain related fields, and enhance key monitoring tools to support growing data complexity within Supply Chain Projects in the reactive environment.
Both Pick n Pay and Britehouse Specialist SAP Division regard the project as a success, and identified the following major benefits:

- Proactive approach to Master Data maintenance and fixes.
- Streamlined and KPI managed Article Take-on Process.
- Staff trained and educated on Master Data and the impact of each field on the Supply Chain.
- Master Data governance embedded for all data processes.
