Britehouse Specialist SAP Division has successfully delivered a number of Socio-Economic Development initiatives aimed at aiding and educating the underprivileged youth of South Africa.
Our biggest project to date is the National E-Learning Management System, which was established by Dimension Data in 2006 and has been successfully deployed in a number of government schools in previously disadvantaged areas around South Africa.
Marking the first e-learning centre in a coloured community, Britehouse Specialist SAP Division partnered up with Dimension Data to launch an E-learning centre on the 26th June 2009 in Voorbrug Secondary School situated in Delft, a poor community situated on the outskirts of Cape Town. Delft was selected as an area in need of intervention as it faces serious poverty-related problems such as drug abuse, teen pregnancy and a high rate of HIV infection.
In the absence of hope, these children often face bleak prospects, and our belief is that by giving these children access to better opportunities through education and the benefit of technology-powered learning, we will introduce academia as a long term value that can change perceptions and expectations of life, seeking to bring hope to a community where there is none. In Delft, 5 schools currently benefit from the programme which reaches over 340 Grade 10 learners each year.
This programme provides the full school syllabus on video as well as written format for Grades 10 to 12 and focuses on practising and improving Maths, Science, English and Computer Studies skills. The E-learning Programme uses the VIKO system (Video In, Knowledge Out) to supplement the learners existing learning material. Computers, projectors, speakers and dropdown screens are installed in various host schools and learners from multiple schools within the area, attend classes at the designated host school each Saturday. Lessons are delivered over the network to the learners, aimed at reaching a high volume of children in a short space of time.
The programme is intended to benefit all high schools in each target community. In addition, communities further benefit from these state-of-the-art learning systems, as teachers are trained in both technology and advanced teaching methods.
The groups target is to reach 40 000 learners by 2015 and with this in mind, new centres are opened frequently. Some 35 schools are currently benefiting from this initiative. In addition to this, Britehouse Specialist SAP Division also supply Voorbrug Secondary School with consumables to assist with the running of the Saturday School Programme and ensure that the students receive a cooked lunch every Saturday.
In June 2010, marking the one year anniversary of the launch of the E-learning centre in Delft, representatives from Britehouse Specialist SAP Division visited Voorbrug Secondary School to attend their Annual Awards Ceremony. Three top achieving students who excelled in Maths, Science and English were presented with laptops donated by Britehouse Specialist SAP Division and an additional five e-learning classrooms have been added to the programme, totalling 10 E-learning classrooms.
In addition to our involvement with the E-learning Programme, Britehouse Specialist SAP Division also maintain an ongoing relationship with Witkoppen Primary School situated in Northern Johannesburg. We have donated computers and printers to the school, and in 2009 we actively embarked on a ‘Train the Trainer’ programme for the teachers, extending the opportunity to our staff members to participate and assist in teaching the Witkoppen School teachers basic PC literacy skills. The objective is to build on their basic skills and to assist them in applying those skills in a practical manner to enable them to become more efficient as teachers.
Britehouse Specialist SAP Division has also contributed towards many other Socio-Economic Development initiatives through the active participation of its business units as well as by making donations throughout the year.
